Interactions With Each Other:
Most of the girls spend a lot of time together. The majority of them seem to be pretty good friends both on and off the court with the exception of a few. Kelsey Peter commented, “Off the court, nothing used to come between us. Now it’s just a bunch of pointless drama.” It’s inevitable that everyday high school drama will find its way into the group, but if it happens to affect them off the court, it will never come onto the court. As Maya Godina said, “issues stay off the court.”
Interactions With Outsiders:
The Hoopsters are as aware as everyone else that they are looked at in a certain way. “People think we are a snobby group of girls that think we are better than everyone else,” said Godina. Ever since middle school, the girls have dealt with people judging them and stereotyping them. “Having experience and knowing how to win does not make us mean or bad people,” said Brooke Golden. Lauren McDonald added, “You have to get to know us before you judge us.”
Interviews:
Kelsey Peter
· What are some issues that are prevalent among the team?
On the court, when we start to lose, we get put down and angry with each other.
Off the court, nothing used to come between us. Now it’s just a bunch of pointless drama.
· Is there conflict between JV and Varsity?
No, not really.
· Why do you separate yourself from the team while not in basketball?
I don’t like to hang out with the rest of the girls because I have other friends. They are sometimes just hard to get along with.
Maya Godina
· What is frustrating about the team?
When we can’t get through a play, we freak out.
· Do outside issues affect the game?
No, issues stay off the court.
· Would you say you work as a team?
We’ve just been drilled the same way for so long and it’s such a team oriented sport that we don’t have much of a choice. We win and lose as a team and it’s never only one person’s fault.
· How do you think others perceive the Hoopsters?
People think we are a snobby group of girls that think we are better than everyone else. We are looked at negatively when we could be looked at positively.
· Is it hard to have a new coach this year along with Coach Granzella?
It’s definitely a little hard to change coaches because there are close connections to Rocky but we can do it.
· Does having the coach’s daughter as a teammate effect anything?
There is the potential that positions and playing time could be effected by this, but Rocky has always been pretty fair about it.
Lauren McDonald
· How do you think people perceive the Hoopsters?
A lot of people don’t like us. We know that.
· If you could tell people something to defend your reputation, what would it be?
You have to get to know us before you judge us.
· What are some issues that the team faces?
There are the “followers” that try and do just what the other girls do and there is always the clashing of personalities. Along with this, it is kind of hard for us all to adapt to playing with different girls.
Brooke Golden
· What are some things that create conflict for the team?
Playing time and different skill levels create some conflict.
· What would you say is the stereotype of a Hoopster?
People would categorize us as snobs and pretty.
· What would you tell people to defend your reputation?
Having experience and knowing how to win does not make us mean or bad people.
· Do you think it’s hard for someone other than Rocky to coach the team?
Yes I definitely think this is a challenge for both the coach and the team because we are in a routine and we like to stick with it.
